Foreign rights is one of the areas of potential revenue, sales, and international exposure for books and authors that is unfortunately rarely understood because it is such a specialized part of book publishing. But its mysteries will be unlocked for you in this interactive presentation by foreign rights expert, author, and publisher Jan Yager, Ph.D.
Jan has been selling foreign rights since her mid-twenties, when she was Director of Subsidiary and Foreign Rights for the legendary independent publishing company, Grove Press, Inc., for a year. Following that, Jan sold foreign rights, for her own books, as well as through her major publishers, in all genres -- nonfiction, adult fiction, young adult and middle grade fiction, and illustrated children's books -- into 36 languages as well as English reprints in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Nigeria. In this presentation, you will learn how to prepare a pitch to foreign agents or publishers as well as some of the co-op exhibits that you can participate in without having to purchase your own booth at an international fair. Jan will even tell you how to increase the likelihood that your book will have foreign appeal even as you are researching and/or writing it!
Jan will tell you some of the Do's and Don'ts of selling foreign rights in 2026!
Hopefully you and your book -- whether it's a novel, a nonfiction business or self-help title, or even a children's book will be the next foreign rights success story!
